Welcome to the web pages of the University of Surrey Society of Change Ringers.

The society was founded in 1971.  We re-activated the University of Surrey Society of Change Ringers on Tuesday 14th October 2003 (click here for the minutes of this meeting).  If you want to find out what Change Ringing is follow this link or this one.

If you are studying at the University of Surrey then why not join this society?  If you're already a ringer, then that's great no matter how experienced you are.  If you are interested in learning to ring then either turn up at Holy Trinity Church (the red brick Church at the top of the High Street next to Sainsbury's) any Wednesday from 2000 - 2130 or contact one of the society's committee.

Four of us ring at Holy Trinity Church, Guildford on Wednesdays from 2000 until 2130.  There are three rings of bells in central Guildford, namely Holy Trinity (8 bells, 23-3-8), St. Mary's (6 bells, 15-0-21) and St. Nicolas' (10 bells, 22-1-10).  Guildford Cathedral is at the top of Stag Hill next to the University.  This has a ring of twelve bells (30-1-10).  The Guildford district is a fairly active district with several quarter peals rung most weeks particularly on Sundays (many including resident society members).

Guildford Cathedral 12 bells 30-1-10 SU985501 Practice night: Tuesday 1945 - 2130 (see this link for more info about the Cathedral)

Holy Trinity 8 bells 23-3-8 SU999495 Practice night: Wednesday 2000 - 2130

This is currently the tower rung at most by resident USSCR members.  This was the temporary Cathedral of the Guildford Diocese from 1927 until the new building on the Stag Hill was consecrated in 1961.

St. Mary's 6 bells 15-0-21 SU996493

St. Mary's has frequently quarter-pealed bells.  It was the leading quarter peal tower in 2000.  The tower is the oldest building in Guildford dating from 1050.  To enter the ringing chamber, you have to walk through the loft on an earthen floor and clamber through wooden beams from the spiral staircase.  1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 were cast by Lester & Pack in 1754 (250 years ago this year) the 5 having been recast by Whitechapel in 1951.  These bells are hard to strike well, particularly the 6.  You'll probably like them for their eccentricities.

St. Nicolas' 10 bells 22-1-10 SU998495 Practice night: Wednesday 1930 - 2100

Traditionally the University tower.  We no longer ring here on a regular basis as we currently have too few ringers to run our own practice.  This is the home of the Guildford Ringing Centre.

The society owns a set of fifteen hand bells.

Eight known Peals have been rung for the society.  Follow this link for details.
